Amy Poehler

I find Amy Poehler to be a wonderful inspiration- Parks and Recreation, a show she wrote, acted in and created, was so funny, optimistic, big-hearted and sweet. She has starred in many hilarious movies and in some of my favourite Saturday Night Live sketches.

She is hilarious and humble and seems like an incredible woman- full of beauty and love for life and humanity…And what an amazing laugh!

Here are some of my favourite quotes from her wonderful book “Yes Please”:

“I want to be around people that do things. I don’t want to be around people anymore that judge or talk about what people do. I want to be around people that dream and support and do things.”

“Hopefully as you get older, you start to learn how to live with your demon. It’s hard at first. Some people give their demon so much room that there is no space in their head or bed for love. They feed their demon and it gets really strong and then it makes them stay in abusive relationships or starve their beautiful bodies. But sometimes, you get a little older and get a little bored of the demon. Through good therapy and friends and self-love you can practice treating the demon like a hacky, annoying cousin. Maybe a day even comes when you are getting dressed for a fancy event and it whispers, “You aren’t pretty,” and you go, “I know, I know, now let me find my earrings.” Sometimes you say, “Demon, I promise you I will let you remind me of my ugliness, but right now I am having hot sex so I will check in later.”

“People are their most beautiful when they are laughing, crying, dancing, playing, telling the truth, and being chased in a fun way.”

And a very funny interview with her discussing the book:

She is active in attempting to make this world of ours a better place for us all- this is touching and if you are like me, will make you cry as well as laugh!

She is also, with her friend Meredith Walker, an advocate for young girls and women around the globe through her beautiful project Smart Girls.

Founded by actor and writer Amy Poehler and producer Meredith Walker, the Smart Girls organization is dedicated to providing a healthy alternative to so much that is being marketed to young people on the internet.

Our motto is: Change the World by Being Yourself.

What began as an online show for young girls and an excuse to host spontaneous dance parties has become a place for information, comedy and community. When we use the word “community,” we take that very seriously. Therefore, our intention is to be a safe place where those who seek us out may be heard and offered a response. We are finding that Smart Girls is a home base where many young men and women are able to express their concerns. Through our “Call to Action” campaigns we encourage smart girls to volunteer, be more involved in the world they live in, and expand their worldview beyond their backyards.

We emphasize intelligence and imagination over “fitting in.” We celebrate curiosity over gossip. We are a place where people can truly be their weird and wonderful selves. We are funny first, and informative second, hosting the party you want to attend.

Here is an older video where she discusses Feminism with a little girl- and as always, this entertaining video ends in a dance party:

“Dancing is the great equalizer. It gets people out of their heads and into their bodies. I think if you can dance and be free and not embarrassed you can rule the world.”

Amy Poehler really embodies love and beauty to me,so I could think of no better person to close out our Sunday Inspirations for June. I hope you enjoy these wonderful videos and perhaps get inspired to read her book and/or check out Smart Girls.
