Anger Is Our Friend

The theme of anger and injustice has been coming up in my life and the lives of my friends and clients the past couple of weeks, so I wanted to share a few thoughts on anger.

To me, anger is an emotion much misunderstood. Our society tells us it’s ‘bad’, that it causes you to be ‘out of control’, that anger is not meant to be fully felt by ‘good people’.

What a disservice to an emotion that can action us into hugely positive change!

We all need to respect our anger. Feel it, truly listen to it. Allow it to tell us what we need to hear. It shows us what needs to be changed and gives us the impetus and fuel to change it.

If I feel anger, I know it means I need to check in with myself and hear what is going on in my life that is not ok with me anymore. What- or who, or where- I have outgrown. What I need to change, move on from, let go of, release…Anger is the fire that spurs me into action.

This does not mean it’s ok to take our anger out on other people.

It means remembering that every emotion we feel is due to something going on within ourselves- yes, external forces may be the trigger for us feeling something but we and we alone are responsible for our reactions. So, we look at what is being pointed out and when we have fully felt the anger, we can then let go of it and use the energy towards the healthy change that needs to be made.

As Julia Cameron says in her book, The Artist’s Way: Anger Is Our Friend.

With love and light,

Laura.x

“ANGER IS FUEL. We feel it and we want to do something. Anger is meant to be listened to. Anger is a voice, a shout, a plea, a demand. Anger is meant to be respected. Why? Because anger is a map.

Anger shows us what our boundaries are. Anger shows us where we want to go. It lets us see where we’ve been and lets us know when we haven’t liked it. Anger is meant to be acted upon. It is not meant to be acted out. Anger points the direction.

When we feel anger, we are often very angry that we feel anger. It tells us we can’t get away with our old life any longer. It tells us that old life is dying. It tells us we are being reborn, and birthing hurts. The hurt makes us angry.

Sloth, apathy, and despair are the enemy. Anger is not. Anger is our friend. Not a nice friend. Not a gentle friend. But a very, very loyal friend. It will always tell us when we have been betrayed. It will always tell us when we have betrayed ourselves. It will always tell us that it is time to act in our own best interests.

Anger is not the action itself. It is action’s invitation.”
